V Narayanan, a seasoned rocket scientist and expert in propulsion systems, has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He succeeds S Somanath, whose tenure ends next week. The official announcement came on Tuesday via the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The order stated: “Shri V. Narayanan, Director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Valiamala, has been appointed as Secretary, Department of Space, and Chairman, Space Commission, for two years starting January 14, 2025 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
Narayanan’s appointment heralds a new chapter for ISRO as he brings nearly four decades of experience in rocket and spacecraft propulsion. Joining ISRO in 1984, Narayanan has contributed significantly to India’s space program, holding critical roles at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC).
Pioneering contributions to India’s space program
Narayanan’s expertise in cryogenic propulsion is widely recognised. He served as the Project Director for the C25 Cryogenic Project, which played a crucial role in the GSLV Mk III vehicle. Under his leadership, the C25 Stage—a vital component for heavy satellite launches—was successfully developed.
Before his tenure at LPSC, Narayanan worked in solid propulsion for sounding rockets and launch vehicles such as the ASLV and PSLV. His technical acumen earned him a First Rank in M.Tech. Cryogenic Engineering from IIT-Kharagpur in 1989, where he further honed his expertise in liquid propulsion systems.
A visionary leader for ISRO
As the new ISRO chief, Narayanan is expected to lead the organisation into its next phase of innovation, including advancements in satellite technology, interplanetary missions, and international collaborations. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to build upon ISRO’s global reputation as a leader in space exploration.
Narayanan will assume his new role on 14 January 2025.
