Retailers expect big wins as Black Friday fever grips India, blending the festive energy of local markets with global shopping trends. Once a primarily Western phenomenon, Black Friday has become a major shopping event across Indian high streets and online marketplaces. Retailers are forecasting a significant spike in sales this year, driven by enticing discounts, festive fervour, and winter wedding demand.
Retailers expect big wins with steep discounts
The buzz around Black Friday is impossible to miss. Vijay Sales, a major electronics retailer, anticipates a 2-3x rise in sales over the weekend, with discounts reaching up to 70% on televisions, refrigerators, and small appliances. “Black Friday is growing into a serious event in India. Each year, it becomes bigger and better,” said Nilesh Gupta, Managing Director at Vijay Sales.
Likewise, apparel brands like Pepe Jeans have reported early success. A 35% jump in online sales has already been recorded, with offline sales expected to climb by 20% compared to last year. Winter apparel and wedding outfits are top-sellers, reflecting seasonal demand.
Black Friday gains traction in Indian retail
Black Friday’s popularity has grown exponentially among Indian shoppers over recent years. V-Mart, which introduced Black Friday sales in South India only last year, predicts strong single-digit growth this weekend. “Wedding and winter wear are driving sales, along with better consumer sentiment,” said Lalit Agarwal, Managing Director of V-Mart.
Even e-commerce players are riding the wave. Myntra has seen robust demand for winter essentials, beauty products, and luxury brands like H&M, Puma, and Mango. Meanwhile, Amazon India is hosting its first-ever Black Friday event, with discounts of up to 75% on electronics, mobiles, and premium brands.
The growing impact of black friday
With retailers expecting big wins, Black Friday is poised to become a staple of India’s shopping calendar. From ethnic wear for weddings to cutting-edge gadgets, Indian consumers are embracing this global shopping phenomenon. As brands continue to innovate and localise their strategies, Black Friday is set to deliver even greater gains for the retail industry.
