Artha India Ventures (AIV) has completed the first close of ₹250 crore for its second early-stage vehicle, Artha Venture Fund II (AVF II), training its sights on seed-stage startups across premium consumption, fintech infrastructure, applied AI and deep tech. The fund is targeting a ₹500 crore corpus with an additional ₹100 crore green-shoe.
What’s new
- Cheque sizes & pace: AVF II plans initial cheques of ~₹4 crore with follow-on rounds of ₹8-16 crore, operating on a four-year deployment cycle. The strategy is to own roughly 15-20% in portfolio companies.
- LP mix: The first close is predominantly domestic, with most commitments from Indian limited partners such as family offices and exited founders, and about 10% from international backers.
Artha India Ventures: Where will the money go?
AIV says AVF II will back 36 seed-stage startups at the intersection of the four focus themes. The mandate is technology-first and scale-oriented, zeroing in on founders solving core infrastructure and market-depth problems.
Managing partner Anirudh A. Damani frames the timing against today’s leaner seed market, noting India has seen sub-100 seed deals in most of the last eight months, the slowest in years and arguing that “tourist founders” have exited while committed entrepreneurs remain. He describes AVF II as favouring concentrated capital behind exceptional founders, prioritising post-seed, post-revenue bets.
AIV has backed names such as Agnikul and LenDenClub, among others, through its earlier vehicles, and says AVF II will stay consistent with a founder-focused approach.
The Significance
- Signal for seed-stage India: At a time when seed activity has cooled, a sizeable first close for a micro-VC vehicle is a confidence marker for founders building capital-efficient, infrastructure-heavy products.
- Clear ownership & follow-on posture: Defined entry, follow-ons and ownership targets give founders visibility on support beyond the first cheque, often a missing piece in crowded early-stage rounds.
