Google Gemini Outage Today, October 8, 2026: Google’s AI assistant Gemini faced widespread disruption on Thursday, with thousands of users reporting failed prompts, repeated error messages and problems accessing conversations. Complaints surged on outage-tracking platform Downdetector, raising questions about the service’s availability and when normal operations might resume.
Nearly 10,000 problem reports had been recorded by 9:40 a.m. Pacific Time (10:10 p.m. IST), according to figures reported by GV Wire. Just ten minutes earlier, the number had crossed 6,000, indicating a sharp rise in complaints within a short period.
Google Gemini Outage: What Is Going Wrong?
Users experiencing the disruption reported that Gemini was failing to answer prompts, sometimes returning an error even after repeated attempts.
Several complaints described the assistant responding with messages such as “I encountered an error doing what you asked. Could you try again?” instead of generating the requested content.
Others reported receiving the message “Something went wrong”, while some encountered error codes 13 and 1155.
A breakdown of user complaints showed that AI generation failures accounted for 69% of reported problems, making them the most frequently reported issue.
Website-related difficulties represented 13% of complaints, while app problems accounted for another 12%.
The figures suggest that users were experiencing problems beyond simply accessing Gemini. In some cases, the service could be opened, but attempts to generate an answer were unsuccessful.
Gemini Users Also Report Disappearing Conversations
Alongside failed AI responses, some users reported an additional problem involving their chat history.
Complaints indicated that recent Gemini conversations were disappearing unexpectedly, leaving users unable to find exchanges they had previously accessed.
The reports raise a separate concern for people who use the assistant for ongoing writing, research and other tasks that depend on earlier conversations.
Gemini has experienced conversation-history problems before. In February 2026, Google acknowledged an issue that prevented some users from viewing their previous conversations on web and mobile platforms.
Google attributed that earlier incident to a background process that affected conversation metadata. There is no evidence establishing a connection between that problem and Thursday’s disruption.
Downdetector Reports Surge, Then Show Early Signs of Slowing
The volume of outage complaints increased rapidly during the evening in India.
Tom’s Guide reported approximately 1,700 complaints during its early coverage, with the figure subsequently rising above 5,000.
GV Wire, later reported that complaints had approached 10,000 by 10:10 p.m. IST.
Has Google Confirmed the Gemini Outage?
Despite the growing number of complaints, Google had not officially acknowledged the reported disruption.
Google’s Gemini status page continued to display “All systems operational” even as users were reporting difficulties.
The difference between the official status display and the volume of user complaints left the full extent of the disruption unclear.
No confirmed technical explanation had been provided for the reported failures.
Although some complaints involved specific error codes, the available information does not establish whether the disruption originated from Gemini’s underlying AI systems, account-related issues or another technical problem.
Is Gemini Working Now? When Will Service Be Restored?
While some outage figures suggested that the pace of new complaints might be slowing, users were still reporting difficulties generating responses and accessing conversations.
Those affected can check Gemini’s official status information and Downdetector for developments. Repeatedly refreshing the application may not resolve failures originating within the service itself.
For now, the clearest indication of the disruption is the concentration of complaints involving Gemini’s primary function: generating answers to user requests.
Whether the reported issues have been fully resolved remains unconfirmed.
