Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro launch may come with a small but unusual change to the company’s familiar pre-order routine. Instead of opening orders on the Friday immediately after its September event, the new Pro models could reportedly become available for pre-order on Saturday, September 12.
The reason appears to have less to do with production or supply constraints and more to do with the calendar.
Apple has scheduled its major iPhone event for Wednesday, September 9. In a typical launch year, the company opens iPhone pre-orders on the Friday of the same week before beginning deliveries the following Friday. That pattern would put this year’s expected pre-order opening on Friday, September 11.
That date makes 2026 different.
September 11, 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and Apple has previously shifted an iPhone pre-order window when its usual launch calendar landed on the same date. The last time a conventional iPhone pre-order Friday fell on September 11, Apple moved orders back by one day to Saturday, September 12.
That precedent is now at the centre of expectations surrounding the iPhone 18 Pro launch.
A one-day shift, not necessarily a product delay
The distinction is important for buyers waiting for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
German publication Macwelt has reportedly received information from a source it considers reliable indicating that iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders will begin on Saturday, September 12.
Apple itself has not confirmed that pre-order schedule in the information available here, so September 12 should still be treated as a reported date rather than an official one.
The more unusual change could be the time
Moving pre-orders from Friday to Saturday would already break Apple’s familiar launch rhythm, but another reported detail makes this year’s potential schedule particularly notable.
Apple normally begins iPhone pre-orders at around 5 a.m. Pacific Time. This time, the reported plan is for pre-sales to open at midnight Pacific Time on Saturday.
If that timing proves accurate, buyers would not simply be waiting an additional calendar day. Apple would also be changing the hour at which customers traditionally rush to its online store.
That midnight opening is one of the more distinctive elements of the reported schedule and could make the iPhone 18 Pro launch feel very different despite the delay amounting to only about a day.
Why September 12 currently looks plausible
The possible Saturday launch is supported mainly by three pieces of information: Apple’s September 9 event date, the fact that its normal Friday pre-order window would land on September 11, and Apple’s previous decision to avoid opening typical iPhone pre-orders on that date.
The 25th anniversary falling this year gives Apple an additional reason to repeat that earlier scheduling decision.
But there is reason to remain cautious about the precise timing.
The report notes that Macwelt incorrectly reported the iPhone 17e release date earlier in 2026. While September 12 is considered plausible, details such as the exact pre-order opening time could therefore still turn out differently.
What iPhone 18 Pro Max buyers should take from this
For customers planning to pre-order the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the key takeaway is that the reported change should not automatically be interpreted as a conventional launch delay.
Based on the information available, the expected shift is tied to Apple’s launch calendar falling on September 11 rather than to a disclosed problem with the device.
Apple is set to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, while the reported pre-order date is September 12. Until Apple formally announces when orders will open, however, both the Saturday date and the reported midnight Pacific start remain unconfirmed.
