The U.S. Army is offering an unusual reenlistment incentive to soldiers at a Georgia-based unit: a four-day pass timed to coincide with the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. The initiative is designed to encourage active-duty soldiers to extend their service while giving them time off around the launch of one of the most anticipated video games of the year.

According to a memorandum confirmed by Army officials, soldiers in the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, can qualify for the special pass if they sign a reenlistment contract between August 1 and November 14, 2026. The pass is specifically linked to the release of GTA VI, which Rockstar Games has scheduled for November 19, 2026.

A Gaming Break Linked to a Longer Service Commitment

The offer comes with a clear requirement. Eligible soldiers must agree to remain in the Army for at least another two years. Reenlistment contracts under the programme can extend for as long as six years.

The four-day pass will be coordinated with soldiers and their chain of command, with the timing intended to match the game’s release. The incentive is currently limited to the Fort Stewart battalion rather than being available across the entire U.S. Army.

The unusual approach has already attracted interest among soldiers in the unit. Twenty of the roughly 130 soldiers eligible for the offer have taken it up, according to Army officials.

Fort Stewart Unit Uses a Different Kind of Reenlistment Perk

The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion is part of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart. The incentive was developed as a way to connect reenlistment with an interest shared by some service members.

Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, said the programme was created by the command team and career counselor to generate enthusiasm among soldiers considering reenlistment.

Unlike traditional financial or career-related incentives, the GTA 6 pass offers a more personal benefit by giving eligible soldiers time away from duty around the game’s launch.

The Army has used a range of incentives to encourage enlistment and reenlistment over the years. These have included education assistance, duty-station preferences and opportunities for specialised training. The latest programme adds a distinctly gaming-focused option at the local unit level.

Army Has Previously Used Gaming to Reach Young People

The Army’s connection with the gaming community is not new. After missing its recruiting target in fiscal year 2018, the service began exploring different ways to reach potential recruits, including through gaming and esports. The Army missed its 2018 recruiting goal by about 6,500 soldiers.

In December 2018, the U.S. Army Recruiting Command announced plans for an Army esports team. The programme was intended to help the service connect with young people in digital spaces and use soldiers’ gaming interests as a way to engage with potential recruits.

The Army’s esports efforts included popular titles such as Call of Duty, Fortnite and League of Legends. Gaming conventions and competitive events also became part of its broader outreach strategy.

GTA 6 Launch Adds to the Anticipation

The reenlistment incentive is tied to the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, the next mainline entry in Rockstar Games’ long-running franchise. GTA V was released in 2013, making the wait for the new instalment more than a decade long.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA VI will launch on November 19, 2026. The game is set in the fictional state of Leonida and returns players to Vice City. Its story follows Jason and Lucia, with Lucia serving as one of the game’s two central protagonists.

For the soldiers eligible for the programme, the release date now comes with an additional incentive. By committing to at least two more years of Army service, they can receive four days away from duty around the arrival of GTA VI.
