Nvidia currently leads the global AI hardware market, with its GPUs powering a majority of the world’s AI training workloads. In 2025, Nvidia generated revenues of over $60 billion, driven largely by demand from cloud providers and AI startups.

AI21 Labs was founded in 2017 and is based in Tel Aviv, Israel. The startup focuses on large language models (LLMs), text generation, and enterprise-grade AI solutions. Its proprietary models and writing tools are used across business, research, and creative applications.
However, competition in AI software and models has intensified over the past two years. By acquiring AI21 Labs, Nvidia would gain direct ownership of language model technology, allowing it to offer end-to-end AI platforms without relying on third-party model providers.

Talent and Research Central to the Deal

AI21 Labs employs an estimated 250-300 engineers and researchers, many with deep expertise in machine learning and natural language processing. The founding team includes veterans from Israel’s strong research and technology ecosystem.
As competition for elite AI talent intensifies, senior researchers now command six-figure to seven-figure annual compensation. Acquiring startups has become a faster way for large tech firms to onboard experienced teams at scale, rather than hiring individuals one by one.
Industry analysts say the depth of AI21 Labs’ talent pool is a key reason behind Nvidia’s interest.

Part of Nvidia’s Long-Term AI Strategy

The potential acquisition aligns with Nvidia’s broader strategy to evolve into a full-stack AI company. Between 2024 and 2025, Nvidia expanded its developer platforms, AI software tools, and enterprise services, signalling a shift beyond hardware.
At the same time, rivals such as AMD, Intel, Google, and Amazon are investing heavily in custom AI chips. Analysts believe owning both hardware and proprietary AI models could help Nvidia maintain its leadership even if hardware margins face pressure in the future.

Israel’s Growing Role in Global AI

The talks also highlight Israel’s increasing importance in the global AI ecosystem. Over the past decade, Israeli AI startups have attracted billions of dollars in funding, particularly in enterprise software, cybersecurity, and advanced analytics.
AI21 Labs has raised over $300 million since its founding, underlining investor confidence in its technology and long-term potential.

What Comes Next

No official announcement has been made so far, but sources say discussions are at an advanced stage. If a deal is finalised, Nvidia is expected to begin integrating AI21 Labs’ technology and teams within 6 to 12 months.
For Nvidia, the potential acquisition reflects a clear strategic direction: as artificial intelligence shifts from standalone tools to full platforms, owning both the hardware and the intelligence that powers it is becoming increasingly critical.
