Austin-based venture capital firm S3 Ventures has announced the close of its eighth fund, a $250 million vehicle that will continue the firm’s strategy of leading Seed, Series A and Series B rounds in business software and healthcare technology.
The new fund, Fund VIII, keeps S3 Ventures’ investing approach consistent: write meaningful early checks, lead rounds, and reserve capital to back portfolio companies as they scale.
According to details shared by the firm, S3 plans to make initial investments ranging from $500,000 to $15 million, with the capacity to invest more than $25 million over the life of a company.
A fund anchored by one limited partner
S3 Ventures said it has been backed since inception by a single limited partner, a philanthropic family tied to a multibillion-dollar foundation focused on empowering children and families.
The firm was founded in 2005 and is led by Founder and Managing Director Brian Smith.
The structure is notable for its continuity: Fund VIII builds on the same long-term backing model that has supported S3 since the beginning, while expanding the platform’s ability to lead and follow on in selected companies over time.
S3 Ventures will continue to focus on business software and healthcare technology, which remain its core sectors. Under Fund VIII, the firm expects to allocate approximately 50% of the fund to Texas-based companies, with the remaining capital reserved for founders across the United States.
The geographic split reinforces S3’s roots in Texas, particularly Austin, while maintaining the flexibility to invest nationally. The fund’s design also suggests S3 intends to stay active across the early-to-growth continuum, with reserves available for companies that demonstrate strong momentum.
Check sizes and follow-on capacity
Fund VIII’s stated range, $500,000 to $15 million for initial checks, positions S3 to engage at different entry points across Seed through Series B, depending on company maturity and the round’s structure.
The ability to invest more than $25 million across the life of a company indicates the fund is built to support multi-round participation, rather than only making early “toe-in-the-water” bets.
This secondary ability can be important for startup founders who want the same cap table: having an understanding lead investor who can stick around for later rounds of funding means that they are less likely to have to replace the funding milestones.
Portfolio and track record
S3 Ventures said it has invested in more than 75 startups that have collectively raised over $3.5 billion. The firm also reported it currently manages 40+ active portfolio companies across Texas and 12 other states.
On liquidity outcomes, S3 stated it has completed more than 35 exits with an aggregate value exceeding $3 billion.
Significance of S3 Ventures’s Fund VIII
The close of Fund VIII adds fresh capital to a venture platform that is explicitly designed to lead early rounds and maintain a long runway for follow-on support.
With S3 reaffirming its focus on business software and healthcare technology and committing roughly half the fund to Texas, the announcement signals that the firm intends to remain a major early-stage participant in the state while continuing to back founders nationwide.
For startups looking for a lead investor at Seed, Series A, or Series B rounds of investment, S3’s strategy of “check-sizes big enough to enter early” and then “larger checks throughout the life of the company” presents a very attractive proposition, one partner that can both enter early and support through the life of the company.
