How a Farmer from Maharashtra Turned Dry Land into a Profitable Avocado Farm

From a dry district of Beed, Maharashtra, farmer Parmeshwar Thorat has achieved something that is the talk of the town. Despite the harsh conditions, he started avocado farming and now earns lakhs of rupees per acre.

Parmeshwar’s journey began in 2018 when he visited Bengaluru for work. He discovered a unique variety of avocados that could survive even in hot climates. Inspired, he decided to grow this variety on his land back home.

Despite that, the journey to success was not smooth. Beed’s dry soil created a lot of problems, primarily because of the lack of water. Undeterred, Parmeshwar put in place new-age solutions. He made holes two feet by two feet in intervals and filled them with manure to enrich the soil. To solve the problem of water, he put in place a drip irrigation system, making maximum use of water.

Parmeshwar also embraced organic farming practices, using natural fertilizers like cow dung. Additionally, he applied grafting techniques to improve the yield and longevity of the avocado plants. His perseverance paid off, and by 2023, he had grown over 1,200 kilograms of avocados, earning nearly 10 lakh rupees per acre.

Parmeshwar’s story is a testament to how hard work and determination can change your life. His successful avocado cultivation not only brought financial stability to his family but also inspired other farmers in the region to explore new crops.

Above is a video of Parmeshwar explaining his Sitafal farming; today, Thorat is a shining example of agricultural success in Maharashtra.
