The rise of generative AI (GenAI) will change India’s job scene, with about 38 million jobs likely to shift by 2030. A new report shows this tech change could raise the economy’s output by 2.61 percent in the organised sector. Plus, if the unorganised sector uses GenAI, we might see another 2.82 percent rise in output.
Automation potential in many fields
The report says 24 percent of tasks in many fields can be fully automated. Another 42 per cent can get better with AI, which could free up 8-10 hours a week for workers who think and create. This level of automation and AI help can greatly boost efficiency and open up many chances for growth.
GenAI’s effects on jobs and output
GenAI is set to change every job, leading to more output and growth. Rajiv Memani, the head of EY India, said, “This change will reshape jobs and help with output and new ideas. Building talent and upskilling should be a key focus for all firms.” He also noted that by encouraging work between public and private groups and investing in talent, India could become a leading spot for workers skilled in AI.
Field-specific output gains
The report shows that the services field will likely gain the most in output due to its big share of labour in total output. However, the manufacturing and building sectors may see less of a change. This means areas that need more human work will get the biggest boost from AI use.
Early steps of GenAI use in India
Even with the big chance AI brings, the survey shows that its use in India is still new. Only 15 percent of the firms asked have used GenAI in real work, while 34 percent have done proof of concepts (POCs), and 11 percent are working to make POCs real. Also, firms are at different levels of data readiness, with just 3 percent fully ready to use AI. On the flip side, 23 percent of firms say they are far from ready for AI work.
Field-specific output gains
The study looked at over 10,000 tasks in various fields to see where output gains might happen. It found that tasks like call center work could see an 80 percent boost in output, while software development might get a 61 percent boost. Other areas that could gain include content creation (45 percent), customer care (44 percent), and sales and marketing (41 percent).
Field-wise outlook
Output gains may differ by field, with the IT/ITeS field likely to see a rise of about 19 percent, healthcare at 13 percent, and banking and insurance at 8-9 percent.
In summary, the GenAI shift is set to change significantly India’s job market. But to make the most of this technology and stay strong in the changing economy, firms need to focus on upskilling and getting their data ready.
