How Carbon & Whale is Turning Plastic Waste Into Modular Furniture

In a world grappling with the environmental crisis of single-use plastic waste, Kochi-based startup Carbon & Whale is rewriting the narrative with innovation and purpose. Founded by Alvin George, Sidharth A K, and Sooraj Varma, this clean-tech venture is transforming discarded plastic into stylish, durable modular furniture while building a profitable business.

The Inception of Carbon & Whale

The story of Carbon & Whale began with a chance meeting between Alvin George, an engineering graduate, and Sidharth A K, a business administration graduate. Both shared a deep frustration over the lack of effective solutions for managing plastic waste. They joined forces with Sooraj Varma, a professor at the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET), to develop innovative methods for repurposing single-use plastic waste. Their vision was clear: to give plastic waste a second life by transforming it into furniture with a lifespan of 15 to 20 years.

Community Engagement and Future

Carbon & Whale has developed an array of products using upcycled plastic waste, ranging from rust-resistant benches to paver tiles stronger than concrete and plant pots that withstand seasonal wear. These products are now featured in public spaces across Kerala and Bengaluru through partnerships with organizations such as Kochi Metro, Kerala Tourism, and the LuLu Group.

The startup’s efforts have not only addressed the state’s mounting plastic waste problem—Kerala generates 450 tonnes of plastic daily and ends up choking its 590-km-long coastline—but also created durable solutions for urban infrastructure. Their interlocking tiles, for instance, are lightweight yet robust, with a lifespan of up to 50 years.

Sustainability Meets Profitability

Since its inception in 2022, Carbon & Whale has experienced remarkable growth. Starting with modest revenue figures of Rs 69,447 in its first year, the company’s annual revenue surged to Rs 5 crore by 2024-2025. This financial success is complemented by its environmental impact: the startup has prevented over 12,000 kilograms of plastic from polluting landfills and oceans.

Carbon & Whale’s innovative approach has garnered attention from corporations eager to support sustainability initiatives through partnerships. These collaborations have enabled the company to fund projects that convert plastic waste into furniture for public spaces like parks and metro stations.

Beyond its business goals, Carbon & Whale is deeply committed to community engagement. Through campaigns like #DeclutterKochi and collaborations with local communities and volunteers, the startup aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic waste. Its ambitious target is to convert one million kilograms of plastic into modular furniture while inspiring others to take action against pollution.

Carbon & Whales’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder that sustainable solutions are not only possible but also profitable—and that even small actions can lead to significant change.
