Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard will step down from Nissan’s board of directors, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. announced on Thursday, amid ongoing efforts to revive the struggling Japanese automaker. Senard, who also served as Nissan’s vice chairman, will resign following Nissan’s annual general meeting scheduled for June, the company confirmed in a statement.
Along with Senard, Pierre Fleuriot, another representative from Renault, will also vacate his position on Nissan’s board at the same time. The action follows just weeks after Renault and Nissan had agreed to reform their two-decade alliance. The new arrangement permits the easing of cross-shareholdings between the two automakers and eliminates Nissan’s requirement to invest in Renault’s electric vehicle business unit, Ampere.
Senard’s departure heralds a momentous shift as Nissan moves through a time of deteriorating performance and strategic adjustment. The realignment of the alliance is symptomatic of deeper changes across the global auto industry, in which electrification and operational autonomy grow more paramount.
This leadership change marks the latest chapter in the evolving Renault-Nissan partnership, which has long been one of the auto industry’s most closely watched alliances.
