In a significant step towards establishing a Unified Digital Identity System, the Government of India is set to enable citizens to simultaneously update their name and mobile number across key identity documents, Update Aadhaar, PAN, Driving License, and Passport through a single unified portal. Official sources confirm that updates will reflect all integrated documents within three working days.
How the Unified Portal Will Work?
The soon-to-be-launched portal will allow users to select specific update options, such as changing mobile numbers or addresses, and upload the required documents online. Once submitted, the changes will automatically sync across all linked IDs, such as Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, and Driving License.
Moreover, applicants seeking a physical copy of their updated documents can request it via the portal after paying a nominal fee. Updated identity cards will be dispatched via post within seven working days. Individuals also retain the option to collect updated documents physically from designated offices.
Pilot Run Shows High Accuracy
According to officials involved in the project, pilot runs have achieved over 92% accuracy so far. The final implementation will proceed once 98% accuracy is achieved. The government expects to roll out the facility to the public within the next few months.
A few technical and legal challenges, particularly concerning data security and privacy are currently in the final stages of resolution. Ensuring a foolproof mechanism for safe data handling has been a key priority.
What’s Next?
- Citizens will get real-time updates on the status and expected delivery timeline of their updated documents via mobile notifications.
- The portal’s final name and branding will be announced after the completion of the last phase of testing.
Why It Matters
This drive is set to cut the frustration of going to different government departments in person separately to get information, thereby eliminating paperwork and enabling better governance. It is an important step towards India’s grander vision of establishing a hassle-free digital identity environment.
