OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is officially entering India with its first office in New Delhi later this year. The move reflects both the company’s rapid global expansion and India’s growing role as one of the most important markets for artificial intelligence.
Why India, Why Now?
India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market in terms of user base. ChatGPT usage in the country has grown fourfold in the past year, with students making up the largest segment of users. Recognizing this surge, OpenAI recently introduced its lowest-cost subscription plan, priced at about $4.60 per month, exclusively for India, making advanced AI tools more accessible to millions of internet users.
By setting up a physical presence, OpenAI aims to strengthen local engagement, expand its enterprise partnerships, and collaborate with policymakers on responsible AI adoption.
Hiring and Expansion Plans
The corporation is advertising employment openings for crucial positions and has set up a legal organisation in India. Account Directors for Digital Natives, Large Enterprises, and Strategic Accounts are among the sales professionals they are now seeking. More businesses will be able to utilise OpenAI’s capabilities in industries including e-commerce, healthcare, education, and finance thanks to these new jobs.
CEO Sam Altman emphasized that this step is not only about business growth but also about collaboration. “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step to make advanced AI more accessible across the country, and to build AI for India, and with India,” he said.
Support from Indian Government
India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the decision. He linked it to the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which aims to make AI accessible to everyone, support local innovation, and develop skilled workers. Vaishnaw said that OpenAI’s involvement will speed up inclusive AI growth by using India’s large number of engineers and researchers.
A Turning Point for India’s AI Ecosystem
The existence of OpenAI confirms India’s standing as a major hub for AI worldwide and goes beyond simple market expansion. India is in a good position to shape the future of artificial intelligence since it has nearly a billion internet users and a thriving startup scene.
New Delhi is just the beginning for OpenAI. Instead of only consuming AI technology, India has the chance to actively shape its advancement and future course.
