GitHub Copilot rolls out powerful new features to boost productivity

GitHub, the world’s leading developer platform, has introduced new AI-powered features to make coding faster and more efficient for businesses worldwide, including India. These updates aim to streamline software development by adapting to an organization’s specific workflows.

The latest enhancements include AI-driven capabilities for editing multiple files at once, predictive suggestions for the next logical edit, and the option to save and share custom instructions for GitHub Copilot directly in the code editor. These upgrades, developed by the Microsoft-owned platform, are designed to make coding more intuitive and efficient.

GitHub also gave a glimpse of a new autonomous software engineering (SWE) agent and announced the availability of Copilot Edits. Additionally, developers can now access Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash, OpenAI’s o3-mini models for Copilot Chat and Edits, and enterprise support for Copilot Workspace.

Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, highlighted India’s growing developer community and the transformative role of AI in programming. “With intelligent AI agents acting as coding assistants, developers in India will have more freedom to focus on innovation,” he said. “By adopting these tools early, Indian businesses can gain a competitive edge and drive the country’s digital and economic growth on a global scale.”

One of the major updates, Copilot Edits, is now fully available. It allows developers to select files, request changes in natural language, and apply edits instantly across multiple files. The user-friendly interface is designed to support fast and efficient iterations.

GitHub also introduced “Project Padawan,” an ambitious step towards an autonomous coding assistant. This future tool will enable developers to assign tasks to Copilot, let the AI handle the work independently, and review the results later.

GitHub is home to over 150 million developers, including teams from 90% of Fortune 100 companies. More than 77,000 organizations have already integrated GitHub Copilot into their workflows, solidifying their position as a key player in AI-powered software development.
