Deutsche Bahn employs Indian train drivers as part of a strategic move to address critical driver shortages in Germany and bolster its workforce for global projects. The German state-owned railway giant has also deepened its presence in India, where it aims to offer consultancy, operations, and maintenance services for metro systems to capture a growing share of the Indian transport market.
Sourcing Indian train drivers to fill german shortages
Facing an ongoing shortage of train drivers, Deutsche Bahn (DB) is turning to India to fill essential roles. “There is a shortage of train drivers in Germany, and we want to use our Indian manpower across global projects,” said Niko Warbanoff, CEO of DB International Operations (DB IO). DB has already trained approximately 100 Indian employees, creating a talent pool to support its international operations.
Deutsche Bahn’s milestone projects in India
Deutsche Bahn’s operations in India have been successful, particularly with India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). In 2022, DB secured a 12-year contract to operate and maintain the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS, a 42-kilometer route. This project marks an important step for DB, aligning with its expansion plans for metro and rail services in India.
Aiming to broaden India’s metro services
To further strengthen its footprint, Deutsche Bahn recently partnered with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This collaboration focuses on system engineering, consultancy, and project management, positioning DB to play a key role in India’s urban transportation development.
Addressing challenges and ensuring quality standards
Despite minor operational challenges, including a recent RRTS incident, DB has maintained high-performance levels and quickly implemented corrective actions. “One-off incidents occur in a project of this scale, but DB is performing exceptionally well on each key performance indicator (KPI),” Warbanoff reassured.
Deutsche Bahn’s hiring of Indian train drivers not only addresses immediate needs but also highlights the growing importance of global talent for its international operations. By investing in Indian expertise, DB aims to position itself as a leader in the Indian metro and urban transit sector, enhancing operational standards and workforce capabilities. As DB expands further, it is poised to contribute significantly to India’s urban transit development while maintaining quality and safety across its global projects. Through these efforts, Deutsche Bahn is setting a new benchmark for international railway partnerships and innovation in mass transit solutions.
