From Groceries to Quick Commerce: BigBasket’s Evolution

Before Blinkit, Zepto, or Swiggy Instamart, when we needed groceries or household essentials delivered to our doorstep, we turned to BigBasket.

As one of India’s first and most trusted online grocery platforms, BigBasket in 2011, introduced many of us to the comfort of shopping from home. Offering scheduled deliveries, a wide selection, and reliable service. Over the years, it built a strong connection with households across the country.

The 10-Minute Play: BigBasket is Speeding Up

Today, as consumers shift toward speed and spontaneity, BigBasket is adapting once again, entering the 10-minute delivery space with its new app, BB Now.

The Tata-backed grocery giant is gearing up to launch its 10-minute food delivery service across India by the end of Financial year 2026, according to co-founder Vipul Parekh. The company plans to power this expansion using its growing network of dark stores, with the current count of 700 expected to grow to between 1,000 and 1,200 by the end of 2025.

Dark Stores, Bright Future: Scaling BB Now

After a successful pilot in Bengaluru that began just a month ago, BigBasket is set to scale operations rapidly, aiming to have 40 dark stores supporting the quick-commerce service by the end of July. This marks a major push into India’s booming quick-delivery segment, as the company looks to strengthen its presence and keep pace with rivals like Zepto, Blinkit, and Swiggy Instamart.

Financial Snapshot

BigBasket’s financial trajectory offers insight into its evolving business model:

  • FY22: Revenue stood at INR 7,090 crore, losses narrowed by 36% compared to the previous year.
  • FY23: Revenue crossed INR 9,000 crore, driven by increased order volumes and repeat customers.
  • FY24 (estimated): Revenues touched INR 10,500 crore with positive EBITDA margins in some verticals.

The quick commerce segment, currently contributing less than 5% of total revenue, is projected to grow threefold by FY26, driven by higher frequency and lower basket size.

Stepping into the ring with instant-delivery leaders

BB Now is set to compete directly with established quick-service platforms like Swiggy’s Snacc, Blinkit’s Bistro, and Zepto Café, all of which currently deliver coffee and ready-to-eat snacks in under 15 minutes. However, BB Now aims to stand out with a curated menu featuring offerings from Starbucks and Qmin, the premium food delivery brand from Indian Hotels, both part of the Tata Group. Notably, BB Now will not partner with any external restaurants, keeping the service exclusive to Tata-owned brands, a company spokesperson confirmed.

And so, BigBasket isn’t just delivering groceries anymore. It’s easing hunger pangs, creating everyday comfort, and quietly becoming a part of memories, one thoughtful delivery at a time.
