Marking World Heritage Day, Anil Agarwal, Founder and Chairman of Vedanta Group, shared a heartfelt message urging Indians, especially the youth, to recognise their role in shaping the nation’s living heritage.

Reflecting on the true meaning of heritage, Agarwal emphasized that it is not just the monuments and manuscripts of the past, but also the actions and contributions made today that define the cultural legacy of tomorrow.

“Heritage kya hai? Heritage hum hai,” he wrote. “We often talk about heritage as if it’s something behind us: monuments, manuscripts, architecture from the 19th century. But the truth is, heritage is also something we’re building in real time — through the lives we nurture, the communities we strengthen, and the work we create.”

Drawing inspiration from a Dior fashion show at Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India, Agarwal highlighted how India’s traditional craftsmanship continues to inspire the world. He recalled how Banarasi brocades, Madras checks, and Nehru collars crafted by over 300 artisans from the Chanakya School of Craft took center stage in a global fashion showcase.

“It was more than fashion. It was our heritage, a living, breathing celebration of who we are and where we’re going,” he noted.

Addressing young Indians directly, Agarwal stressed that every individual’s efforts matter in the ongoing story of India’s growth and cultural evolution. “You’re a part of history, the Great Indian Story.

What you do matters, how you live your life counts,” he said, reflecting on his own journey of building businesses and creating employment opportunities as his contribution to the nation’s heritage.

In closing, he extended World Heritage Day greetings to his fellow citizens and posed a thought-provoking question: “Did you know that India has 43 World Heritage Sites? How many have you visited?”

Agarwal’s message comes at a time when India is actively working to preserve its historical sites while promoting contemporary cultural expressions as part of its global identity. His statement is a reminder that heritage is both a treasure of the past and a responsibility for the future.
