Microsoft commits $3 billion to Supercharge India’s AI revolution

Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella has declared an aggressive $3 billion investment in India over the next two years. This transformational push is for cloud and AI infrastructure, training millions of Indians, and setting up new datacentres. It coincides with the aspiration of India to achieve the status of a developed nation by 2047, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Transformational investment for India’s growth goals
The investment includes the development of Microsoft’s cloud and AI capabilities, where the fourth datacentre region will go live in 2026. The company will develop a scalable AI computing ecosystem to serve the needs of India’s fast-growing AI startups and research community. Moreover, it aims to provide 10 million people with the basic AI skills by 2030 through the ADVANTA(I)GE India initiative, continuing to ensure inclusive and equitable skilling.

Responsible AI: Ethical principles and fair practices
Responsible AI approaches by Microsoft are based on fairness, safety, privacy, transparency, and accountability. Thus, AI technologies should serve the greater good and enable organizations and people in India to achieve more.

Fostering AI innovation and startup collaborations
Microsoft Research India has also launched an AI Innovation Network to foster collaboration with startups and digital natives. Partnerships, such as the one with Physics Wallah, aim to create innovative solutions, blending AI advancements with practical applications. This initiative builds on Microsoft’s history of incubating startups in sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and transportation.

Strengthening India’s SaaS ecosystem
In collaboration with SaaSBoomi, Microsoft signed an MoU to accelerate the AI and SaaS ecosystem of India. Through this partnership, it aims at empowering more than 10,000 entrepreneurs and supporting 5,000 startups along with generating 200,000 jobs while boosting innovation and regional development in tier-II cities.

Sustainability goals and AI growth
Microsoft’s sustainability growth strategy also speaks to the requirement of AI resources. The company will continue with not using water cooling at new datacentres and make use of renewable energy for the ambition it has given to itself—being carbon-negative by 2030. This converges with Microsoft’s focus on community empowerment, environmental justice, and responsible AI growth, representing an important milestone.
