Osamu Suzuki, the driving force behind India’s automotive revolution with the Maruti 800, has passed away at the age of 94. The former Chairman and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Suzuki’s unparalleled leadership spanned over four decades, shaping the Indian car market and earning him a legacy as a transformative figure in global automotive history.
The man who revolutionised Indian roads
Osamu Suzuki’s journey in the automotive industry began after marrying Shoko Suzuki, the granddaughter of Suzuki Motor’s founder. Taking on his wife’s surname, as per Japanese tradition, Suzuki embarked on a career that would redefine India’s car market.
In 1982, Suzuki Motor partnered with the Indian government to establish Maruti Udyog Ltd near New Delhi. This partnership led to the iconic launch of the Maruti 800 in December 1983, a vehicle that transformed Indian roads with its affordability, reliability, and efficiency. At a time when the market was dominated by outdated Ambassador and Fiat models, the Maruti 800 became an aspirational car for Indian families. With waiting lists extending up to three years, it became a symbol of mobility and economic progress.
Maruti 800: A game-changer
The Maruti 800 wasn’t just a car; it was a cultural phenomenon. Priced competitively, it introduced millions of Indians to modern car ownership. The vehicle’s success turned Maruti into India’s largest car manufacturer, a position it continues to hold, commanding over 40% of the market share.
Osamu Suzuki’s tenure as Suzuki Motor’s President and later Chairman and CEO made him the longest-serving head of a global automaker. Under his leadership, Suzuki Motor expanded its reach, becoming one of the world’s top motorcycle manufacturers.
Despite facing challenges, including a fuel-economy misstatement scandal in Japan, Suzuki’s resilience and frugal leadership style earned widespread respect. He famously flew economy class and embraced simplicity throughout his life.
Osamu Suzuki stepped down as CEO in 2015 and remained Chairman until 2021, overseeing Suzuki Motor’s transition during the electric vehicle revolution. His vision, embodied in the Maruti 800, continues to define India’s automotive landscape.
