Los Angeles, March 3, 2025 — Actress and model Julia Fox ignited a firestorm of controversy at the Vanity Fair Oscars after-party by donning a sheer mesh dress strikingly similar to the one Bianca Censori wore at this year’s Grammys. The outfit, designed by Dilara Findikoglu, featured a translucent fabric that left little to the imagination, drawing immediate comparisons to Censori’s headline-grabbing ensemble.
Critics said that Fox had imitated Censori’s inflammatory manner, setting social media sites on fire. Numerous users characterised the ensemble as a conscious attempt to imitate Censori, who caused a stir at the Grammy Awards when she and her husband Kanye West debuted a bold mesh garment. InStyle magazine, on the other hand, presented an alternative viewpoint, pointing out that Fox’s long brunette wig, which subtly covered her figure, was a reference to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus.
In a candid interview with Nylon, Fox described her style as “freakish” and “crazy,” emphasizing her preference for clothes that tell a story. “I always have to look in the mirror and be like, ‘Do I look badass?’ And if the answer is no, then I have to change,” she said. Known for her boundary-pushing fashion choices, Fox added, “I like clothes to tell a story. I think when you’re jumping on every trend that comes along, it shows a lack of authenticity or identity.”
The choice of attire also reignited discussions about Fox’s past relationship with Kanye West, which lasted briefly from December 2021 to February 2022. In her memoir, Down The Drain, Fox accused the rapper of exerting control over her wardrobe choices during their relationship, a claim that has since fueled speculation about her motivations behind the provocative Oscars look.
Censori’s mother, Alexandra, who previously broke her silence following her daughter’s Grammys appearance, refrained from commenting on the controversy. Meanwhile, Kanye West added fuel to the fire with a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter), asserting his influence over Censori’s fashion decisions. “PEOPLE SAY THE RED CARPET LOOK WAS HER DECISION. YES I DON’T MAKE HER DO NOTHING. SHE DOESN’T WANT TO, BUT SHE DEFINITELY WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO IT WITHOUT MY APPROVAL,” the post read.

While others praised Fox’s daringness, others considered the outfit an uninspired effort to regain the limelight. Fox, however, seemed not to care about the criticism, insisting that her fashion sense reflects her uniqueness. “I’ve always been attracted to the freaks, people that dress crazy. I find that those people are more my cup of tea,” she said in Nylon.
While the controversy rages on, only time will tell if Fox’s latest antic will cement her status as a brazen fashion icon or that of a trend follower like many others. Meanwhile, both Fox and Censori continue to rule the fashion conversation, each representing a distinct aspect of Hollywood’s constantly shifting style landscape.
