Alphabet unveils Gemini AI making Google TVs smarter than ever

Alphabet Inc is ready to redefine the world of television, embedding its game-changing Gemini AI into TVs and reshaping how we watch and interact. This will form one of the worlds’ most intelligent upgrades, putting Google Assistant yet closer to achieving a more intuitive and clever product that it can supply to its clients.

Alphabet previewed Monday at the CES technology conference its updated Google TV software. This promises far more conversational voice commands, deeper content search, and integration with YouTube. The feature of the update is Gemini that will allow conversational interactions on third-party TVs, thereby potentially eliminating the need for the repetition of the “Hey Google” trigger phrase. Google demonstrated how Gemini can carry out natural commands, like fetching videos from Google Photos taken in a recent holiday.

Google has announced that Gemini will be distributed to third-party TV brands such as Sony Group Corp., Hisense Home Appliances Group Co., and TCL Technology Group Corp., marking the first time it distributes the AI-based feature. Till now, it was only found on Google’s own first-party streaming devices. The new Google TV platform is looking to compete with Samsung, Amazon, and Roku leading television operating systems.

Gemini Feature: TVs with Always-On Mode and Advanced Sensors

Besides voice control, Google teased “always-on” mode for TVs-through advanced sensors that will sense users approaching the screen. Information such as news updates and weather reports together with reminders will be surfaced by the television when a person nears the screen. TCL is planned to unveil the TVs featuring this functionality by the end of 2025; Hisense is scheduled to do so in 2026.

The updated Google TV software promises enhanced conversational voice commands, deeper content searches, and better integration with platforms like YouTube. The standout feature of the update, Gemini, enables natural, conversational interactions without the need to repeat the “Hey Google” trigger phrase. During the demonstration, Gemini seamlessly retrieved videos from Google Photos based on user commands, such as fetching memories from a recent holiday.

For the first time, Gemini will be available on third-party TV brands, including Sony, Hisense, and TCL, breaking new ground as it expands beyond Google’s own devices. With this move, Alphabet aims to challenge the dominance of existing TV operating systems like Samsung, Amazon, and Roku, offering a smarter, more efficient alternative for users.

This Gemini-powered update speaks to Alphabet’s commitment to redefining the smart TV experience. With AI-driven convenience blended with personalized features, Google TV is poised to set a new standard for home entertainment. When these updates roll out later this year, users can expect a seamless, more interactive, and tailored TV experience.
