The Model A vehicle from the company effortlessly transitioned from driving on a city road to performing a vertical takeoff, a feat never before publicly shown in an urban setting.
A Historic Milestone for Flying Cars
Alef Aeronautics, a California firm focusing on sustainable mobility, has been working on flying car technology for almost a decade. The latest test featured their Model A taking off from a city street in an unnamed urban area. In contrast to earlier tests, which were usually tethered flights or takeoffs from runways, this test demonstrated the vehicle’s capability to function under actual city conditions.
Jim Dukhovny, Alef Aeronautics CEO, likened the moment to the Wright brothers’ maiden flight at Kitty Hawk. “This test is a turning point for transportation,” Dukhovny said. “It demonstrates that a new era of personal flight is not theoretical—it’s real now.”
Cutting-Edge Features and Safety Measures
The Model A is an all-electric vehicle capable of functioning as both a street-legal car and a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft. It features a sleek, aerodynamic design for both driving and flying capabilities.

Market Demand and Future Production
The technology has already found appeal among the public. Alef says it has received 3,300 pre-orders for the Model A and is planning to make the first customer deliveries later this year. The car has an estimated 220-mile driving range and an 110-mile flight range, making it an attractive option for urban drivers who want to avoid traffic jams.
The company’s plans go beyond the Model A. Alef is also developing its next model, the Model Z, a lower-priced flying car due to be launched in 2035 with a projected starting price of $35,000.

Regulatory Approval and Investment Backing
