Suzlon partners with Jindal on a project aimed at powering green steel production, aligning with their commitment to sustainability. On Thursday, Suzlon announced it has received a sizeable order for 400 MW from JSP Green Wind 1, a special-purpose vehicle of Jindal Renewables, aimed at decarbonising steel production. “This is the largest commercial and industrial wind energy order in India,” the companies said in a joint press statement.
Suzlon shall develop 127 WTGs at an optimized capacity of 3.15 MW each, employing ground-breaking Hybrid Lattice Tubular (HLT) towers in Koppal, Karnataka. The power generated will be consumed captively at the steel plants in Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
This project would significantly improve the operational sustainability and add to India’s renewable energy targets. With this order, Suzlon’s consolidated order book now stands at nearly 5.4 GW. With this, Bharat Saxena, president, of Jindal Renewables, said, “With this, we have integrated green energy sources into our stainless steel business line as part of the company’s overall target of achieving net-zero carbon by 2047.”
Currently, Jindal Renewables is working on around 3 GW of renewable energy projects all over India for which some of the PPAs are signed already. The firm plans to expand to a capacity of around 12 GW by 2030, integrating energy storage and the production of green hydrogen, henceforth giving it the profile of one of the crucial participants in India’s decarbonisation efforts.
JP Chalasani, CEO, of Suzlon Group, noted: “One of the critical areas where decarbonisation of the steel sector needs to be intervened upon if we want to achieve any of these goals of renewable energy in India. I can assure everyone that this association will inspire many in the industry to take a relook at their operations as we collectively strive towards making a more sustainable future.”
This joint venture will act as a vital milestone in allowing the steel industry to bypass decarbonization, while Suzlon has said it is ready for more of a sustainable greener future for the sector as well as the country. The Suzlon-Jindal project is set to advance green energy initiatives, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly steel production in India.
