Uber Gains as BluSmart Exits, Customers and Investors Shift

In a significant shift within India’s ride-hailing sector, Uber stands to gain significantly following the abrupt market exit of BluSmart, once considered a pioneer in the electric taxi services domain. BluSmart’s departure has created a vacuum that key players like Uber, Ola, Rapido, and InDrive are now eager to fill, with early signs pointing to Uber as the biggest beneficiary.

According to industry data from brokerage firm Motilal Oswal in January 2025, Uber already leads the Indian taxi market, clocking an average of 8.4 lakh daily rides, far ahead of its competitors Ola (4.6 lakh rides) and Rapido (3.2 lakh rides). Uber also boasts a substantial active monthly user base of 3.36 crore, outpacing Rapido’s 3.18 crore and Ola’s 2.86 crore.

The surge is seen not only in ridership numbers but also in investor confidence. Experts feel Uber is poised to further consolidate its leadership as customers seek dependable options following BluSmart’s withdrawal.

Mobile application statistics further reinforce Uber’s commanding position, with over 50 crore downloads, significantly higher than its rivals Rapido, InDrive, and Ola, each with approximately 10 crore downloads.

As per Business Standard, frequent BluSmart customer Yashvi Shaily, concurred with Agrawal. She added that she prefers Uber to the other apps due to greater comfort, easy payment, and well-mannered drivers. Shaily expressed disappointment over BluSmart’s closure, noting, “BluSmart services were comfortable, with transparent payments and reliable drivers.”

Shaily also shared that a balance of ₹16,474 lying in her BluSmart wallet was successfully refunded a day after she posted about it on social media and contacted the company’s helpline.

With the unexplained disappearance of BluSmart from the scene, Uber’s strategic advantage in the Indian market looks more entrenched than ever before, riding high on customer stickiness and investor hopes.
