In a landmark move for Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise ownership, the Torrent Group has acquired a 67% majority stake in the Gujarat Titans, following necessary approvals from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The diversified healthcare and energy conglomerate finalised the deal with Irelia Company after signing definitive agreements on February 12, 2025. With the regulatory approvals, the acquisition has been officially completed. Irelia, the previous majority stakeholder, will retain a 33% minority stake in the franchise.

A Strategic Business Diversification

Torrent Group, a giant in India’s pharmaceutical, power generation, transmission, and city gas distribution industries, views this acquisition as a means to increase its presence in the thriving Indian sports ecosystem. This action is in line with Torrent’s overarching plan to diversify outside of conventional business domains.. “With Gujarat Titans’ rapid success in the IPL, we see immense potential in this franchise. We aim to bring our expertise in scaling and managing large businesses to support its continued growth,” a company spokesperson stated.

Gujarat Titans’ Meteoric Rise in IPL

Founded in 2021, Gujarat Titans quickly established itself as a formidable IPL contender. The team clinched the IPL title in its debut season (2022) and finished as runners-up in 2023. Led by captain Shubman Gill and coached by Ashish Nehra, the team has built a strong following, with a brand value rising exponentially in recent years.

BCCI’s Role & Implications on IPL Ownership

The BCCI approval of Torrent Group’s majority stake in an IPL franchise reflects the way franchise ownership in IPL is going. Industry experts say this deal can become a template for further corporate investment into the league.

With Torrent Group taking charge, Gujarati Titans’ followers and IPL stakeholders will be keenly observing the way this new charge guides the team’s future strategy, sponsorships, and brand positioning.
