Telangana Government issued ₹205 Crore for Warangal Airport Expansion

The Telangana government has sanctioned ₹205 crore for land property to develop the Mamnoor Airport in Warangal. This significant move has boosten regional connectivity. The GMR Group has been managing Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport that has allotted a “No Objection Certificate” (NOC) for the project.

Land Purchase for Infrastructure Development

On Sunday, Government order (GO) issued that the funds will be used to acquire over 280 acres of land required for the airport’s expansion. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had earlier expressed preapration to develop the Mamnoor Airport for A-320 type aircraft operations under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). As part of the plan, an additional 253 acres of land, free of cost and clear of troubles, must be handed over to the AAI for runway expansion and infrastructure development.

AAI’s Commitment to Warangal Airport

In July 2022, the AAI informed the Telangana government of its willingness to bear the costs of infrastructure, operations, and maintenance for the upgraded airport. A master plan for the development has been prepared, focusing on accommodating A-320 aircraft, which are widely used for domestic operations.

Overcoming Regulatory Hurdles

The project’s progress required an NOC from Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. This was necessary due to a concession agreement between the GMR Group and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which restricts the development of new airports within a 150 km radius of the Hyderabad airport until the 25th anniversary of its opening.

The Telangana government’s GO permits the Warangal District Collector to oversee the acquisition of 280.30 acres of land and complete the process promptly. An additional directive has been issued to acquire the 253 acres needed for the runway expansion and hand it over to the AAI.

Boosting Regional Connectivity

The development of the Mamnoor Airport is expected to enhance regional air connectivity, benefiting passengers and supporting economic growth in the Warangal region. With the state government and AAI collaborating, the project is poised to bring long-term benefits to Telangana’s aviation sector.
