Food and grocery delivery platform Swiggy Instamart came under scrutiny after users reported that eggs and chicken were unavailable for delivery in certain parts of Mumbai and Delhi NCR on Mahashivratri. The issue was first flagged by customers on social media, particularly on Reddit, where several users shared screenshots showing the unavailability of these items on the platform.
Multiple posts on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that while other groceries were available, poultry and egg products appeared to be restricted for the day. Some users speculated that this could be due to religious sensitivities, as many Hindus widely observe Mahashivratri as a day of fasting. Others questioned whether the decision was based on government directives or a platform policy.
A Reddit used said, “Looks Like Swiggy is not selling eggs and meat on Mahashivratri“, In reply to which another user said, “I think it’s a Mumbai problem“, to which another user responded, “Its not showing to someone from Pune too, Maybe a Maharashtra Problem“

A Reddit thread discussing the issue gained traction, with users debating whether the move was intentional or a result of supply chain disruptions. Screenshots attached in the thread showed that searches for “eggs” and “chicken” on Swiggy Instamart yielded no results in affected areas, while availability remained unaffected in other regions such as Hyderabad and Chennai.

As of now, Swiggy has not issued an official statement clarifying the reason behind the temporary unavailability of these products. However, users have reported that normal service has resumed in some locations.
This is not the first time food delivery services have faced similar concerns regarding the availability of non-vegetarian items during religious occasions. The debate over the balance between consumer choice and cultural considerations is a recurring topic on social media.
Users, however, when cross-checked on other Quick-Commerce Platforms such as Zepto and Blinkit, faced no such issues. They had the usual meat and poultry options available across the country.
