Google Loses Another India Policy Chief as Sreenivasa Reddy Resigns

Google has witnessed another high-profile exit in India, as its head of public policy, Sreenivasa Reddy, has stepped down, marking the second resignation in the critical role within two years.

Reddy, a former Microsoft and Apple executive, came aboard Google in September 2023 when the technology giant was fighting several antitrust cases and growing its payments and digital content services.

While Google has confirmed Reddy’s departure, the company has not disclosed the reasons behind his exit. According to an internal memo, Iarla Flynn, Google’s policy head for Northern Europe, will take over as interim policy lead for India.

“India is a crucial market for Google, and we remain deeply committed to its success,” the memo stated.

Policy Challenges in India

This leadership shake-up highlights the regulatory hurdles global tech giants face in India. Reddy’s predecessor, Archana Gulati, resigned in 2022, just five months after taking charge.

India remains a key market for Google, with a majority of the country’s smartphones running on its Android OS. However, the company’s relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has been complex, with increasing scrutiny over its business operations.

Google India Leadership Team

Google India’s leadership is spearheaded by Sanjay Gupta, who serves as the Country Head and Vice President. Other key executives include Ambarish Kenghe, leading the Google Pay division, and Saikat Mitra, who oversees trust and safety. The company’s legal and regulatory affairs are managed by Aditya Pande.

As Google navigates regulatory challenges in one of its most significant growth markets, the resignation raises concerns about the company’s long-term policy stability in India.
