IndiGo, India’s largest airline by fleet size, is considering an earlier induction of wide-body aircraft to cater to surging international travel demand. The move underscores IndiGo’s commitment to evolving its business model and enhancing customer experiences as global travel rebounds strongly post-pandemic.
Plans to expand wide-body fleet
IndiGo is in discussions with Norse Atlantic Airways to wet-lease six Boeing 787 (B787) aircraft. This arrangement, where the lessor provides both the aircraft and flight crew, would allow the airline to introduce wide-body planes sooner than anticipated. The airline’s first wide-body order, announced in April, includes 30 Airbus A350 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2027.
Currently, IndiGo operates two Boeing 777 wide-body planes leased from Turkish Airlines on its India-Istanbul route, providing a base of operational experience.
Strengthening International presence
The move to expedite the inclusion of wide-body planes signals IndiGo’s intent to bolster its international operations and compete with rivals such as Air India. In recent years, Air India has significantly expanded its global footprint using wide-body aircraft for long-haul flights to Europe, North America, and Australia.
IndiGo, which began business class services in September 2024, aims to strengthen its presence in the premium travel market, offering a differentiated experience to customers.
Addressing supply chain challenges
IndiGo’s plans come amid global supply chain disruptions affecting aircraft deliveries. Recognizing these challenges, the airline is exploring interim solutions to introduce long-range aircraft to its fleet earlier.
“IndiGo is committed to evolving to provide our customers an alternate and differentiated travel experience, which is best in class,” the airline stated. “In April, IndiGo announced the order for wide-body A350-900 aircraft with deliveries starting 2027, alongside the XLR aircraft expected next year (2025). IndiGo is well-positioned to expand our geographic reach and serve the ever-growing demand for international travel to and from India.”
India’s aviation sector on the rise
India’s aviation market is experiencing rapid growth, with domestic airlines placing record aircraft orders. IndiGo alone signed a deal for 500 Airbus A320neo family planes in June 2023, marking the largest single aircraft order in history. This reflects the country’s emergence as a global aviation hub, supported by growing passenger demand and robust government policies.
