The Indian Biogas Association (IBA) awaits investment of around ₹1,600 crore in the biogas sector as the group heads for one of the biggest Renewable Energy India Expos, starting from Thursday. The organisation represents operators, manufacturers, and planners of biogas in the country and has been optimistic about the potential it believes the event will bring.
In a statement to PTI, IBA Chairman Gaurav Kedia shared, “REI 2024 is expected to see investment announcements of around ₹1,600 crore in the biogas sector.” He also noted that the expo is expected to draw 20% more participants than last year. Vast untapped potential in the biogas sector was a topic Kedia spoke very highly of. He said despite biogas presently contributing less than 1% of India’s energy mix, it is still left with vast growth potential.
According to him, by 2030, biogas will hold an important position in the country’s energy landscape. Being supported by several government ministries and organizations, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the National Institute of Bioenergy stand at the forefront. The REI 2024 will be conducted for three days in the India Expo Centre, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and is an important platform for renewable energy innovations.
The attendees can witness the technological development of bio-energy, solar power, wind energy, electric vehicles, and even energy storage solutions integrated toward reaching net-zero emissions for India. Indian Biogas president AR Shukla said he expected an increased investor interest in this year’s expo, with over 50,000 visitors drawn both by the rising interest in bio-energy and by the government.
By taking the industry to the potential capacity of around 62 million tonnes of annually produced compressed biogas, India could potentially break free from dependence on imported fuels and provide potential environmental solutions for the energy future of India.
