GeM Portal Achieves ₹3 Lakh Crore Procurement Milestone in FY 2023-24

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal has achieved a significant milestone with public procurement crossing ₹3 lakh crore so far in the current financial year, according to a government official. The platform’s strong performance highlights its growing role in streamlining procurement processes for ministries, departments, and other government bodies.

Record Procurement in 2023-24

The financial year 2023-24 has witnessed unprecedented activity on the GeM portal, with total procurement by central and state government departments, as well as public sector enterprises, reaching ₹4 lakh crore. The portal’s user-friendly interface and transparent procurement system have made it an essential tool for government transactions.

Origins and Expansion of GeM

Launched on August 9, 2016, the GeM portal was designed to run smoothly the online purchase of goods and services by central government ministries and departments. Over the years, the platform has expanded its reach to include state governments, panchayats, and cooperatives, further solidifying its impact.

In October, the GeM portal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state of Sikkim, enabling the state to utilize the platform for procurement activities. This move brought all Indian states under the GeM umbrella, marking a new phase of inclusivity for the portal.

MSMEs Shine on GeM

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have emerged as key beneficiaries of the GeM portal. Since its inception over 9.7 lakh MSMEs have registered on the platform, collectively receiving orders worth ₹4.19 lakh crore. This accounts for approximately 40% of the total procurement through GeM, showcasing its role in empowering small businesses and fostering economic growth.

Global Recognition for GeM

Globally, South Korea’s KONEPS is recognized as the largest public procurement platform. The GeM portal ranks second, followed by Singapore’s GeBIZ. This international standing underscores India’s progress in digital governance and procurement innovation.

Procurement Highlights for October

In October alone, procurement by central organizations on GeM amounted to ₹30,264 crore, reflecting the platform’s growing adoption and efficiency. A government official noted, “That covers all the states under the GeM,” emphasizing the portal’s comprehensive coverage and utility.

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal continues to revolutionize procurement processes, driving efficiency, transparency, and inclusivity. With its impressive growth trajectory, GeM is poised to further strengthen India’s digital economy.
