Bimla “Bim” Bissell, the rock behind the making of FabIndia what it is today, passed away at 93. Bim helped raise the brand as a symbol of Indian craft and culture. Her amazing path and impact have left a strong mark on Indian fashion and craft, showing the world what it means to honour Indian art.

Bimla Nanda was born in a Punjabi family. Later, she married John Bissell, a man from America who started FabIndia in 1960. Before she joined John in his work, Bim was a social secretary for U.S. ambassadors in Delhi. One of them was John Kenneth Galbraith, who worked for President Kennedy. Her shift from working in politics to design was a big change that marked the start of her key role in FabIndia, helping to create a special place for traditional Indian crafts in the world.

Leading Indian crafts with FabIndia

Bim Bissell’s art touch and love for Indian culture were key in making FabIndia stand out. She pushed for traditional handloom sarees and silver jewellery, forming deep ties with artisans across India. Her hard work not only made the brand strong but also helped rural craftspeople, building a lasting network that still grows today. Under her care, FabIndia added items like home goods and furniture, mixing India’s rich culture with modern living so that Indian crafts could be seen worldwide.

A lifelong advocate for learning and culture

Bim also cared deeply about education. In the 1960s, she set up the Playhouse School in Delhi to boost creativity in young kids. Years later, her work continued with a new playhouse in Sunder Nursery in 2021, showing her love for helping the next generation.

Known for her special handloom sarees and silver bangles, Bim showed grace and style all her life. Even in her older years, she stayed active in Delhi’s social and cultural life, leaving behind a legacy of style, kindness, and new ideas. Her work in fashion and society will keep inspiring people for years to come.
