Imagine charging your laptop with nothing but sunlight. Lenovo is turning this futuristic vision into reality with its newly unveiled Yoga Solar PC concept at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025. Designed to reduce reliance on traditional power sources, this laptop has a built-in solar panel on its lid, allowing users to harness solar energy directly — anywhere the sun shines.
A Bright Idea for Sustainable Tech
The Yoga Solar PC is more than just a concept; it’s a statement. Its integrated solar panel features 84 solar cells utilizing a Back Contact cell design that maximizes light absorption. By hiding all the mounting brackets and electrical contacts behind the cells, Lenovo has achieved an impressive 24% efficiency rate — far surpassing most silicon-based solar panels found in consumer electronics today.
While it doesn’t quite reach the efficiency of perovskite film panels (which boast up to 43% efficiency), Lenovo’s innovation can still power up to an hour of video playback with just 20 minutes of direct sunlight. That means you could enjoy a Netflix episode under the sun without ever touching a power outlet.
Smart Charging with Dynamic Solar Tracking
Lenovo’s Dynamic Solar Tracking system is installed on the Yoga Solar PC to maximise every ray of sunlight. Whether you’re working outside or by a sunny window, this clever function ensures that every bit of solar energy is effectively transformed into helpful electricity by tracking the intensity of the sun’s rays and showing real-time data on the quantity of power being created.
High Performance Meets Eco-Friendly Design
Driven by Intel’s Lunar Lake processors with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, the Yoga Solar PC does not compromise on performance. It’s slim profile, only 15 millimeters thick and weighing approximately 2.29 pounds, contains a 14-inch OLED screen that provides breathtaking visuals, making it an ideal partner for work and play.
Not Just for Laptops: The Solar Power Kit
Lenovo also introduced an external solar power kit concept for current Yoga users. This portable kit unfolds like a book to reveal two solar panels that can charge any USB-C device directly from the sun. It can also juice up an included power bank for later use. While it’s still a prototype, this innovation points to a future where power banks and wall outlets might just become a thing of the past.

Challenges Under Cloudy Skies
The Yoga Solar PC’s solar panel shines brightest under direct sunlight, but Lenovo admits there are challenges in low-light conditions. As the company continues to fine-tune the technology, it remains unclear how well the laptop will perform on overcast days. Nonetheless, the concept demonstrates a promising step toward making renewable energy a practical part of everyday tech.
What’s Next for Solar-Powered Laptops?
Lenovo’s bold move at MWC 2025 signals a new era of eco-friendly computing. While there’s no word yet on when the Yoga Solar PC might hit the market, the excitement surrounding its potential is palpable. If Lenovo can overcome the current limitations, the Yoga Solar PC could revolutionize how we think about power and portability.
