Bhutan’s Khorlochhu Hydropower Project is on track for a September 2029 launch. This ₹6,900 crore initiative, developed by Tata Power and Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC), will produce 600 MW of renewable energy. Construction has already begun, with significant progress made on tunnel diversion work.

Tata Power’s key role in Bhutan’s energy growth

Tata Power plays a pivotal role in Bhutan’s Khorlochhu Hydropower Project. The company partnered with DGPC, securing a 40% equity stake in Khorlochhu Hydro Power Ltd. This collaboration, formalised in August, highlights their shared commitment to clean energy. Additionally, the partnership plans to develop a 5,000 MW renewable energy portfolio in Bhutan.

Expanding Bhutan’s clean energy infrastructure

Apart from Khorlochhu, Tata Power and DGPC are focusing on another project, the Dorjilung Hydroelectric Project. Scheduled to begin pre-construction work in January 2025, this 1,125 MW initiative will be operational by mid-2031. Together, these projects are enhancing Bhutan’s energy infrastructure while aligning with sustainability goals.

Bhutan’s vision for renewable energy

By investing in projects like Khorlochhu, Bhutan is advancing its renewable energy capabilities. These initiatives address growing energy demands and promote economic development. Tata Power, while not pursuing projects in Nepal currently, remains open to future opportunities in the region.

Collaborations like these strengthen Bhutan’s position as a clean energy leader, fostering sustainable growth and regional cooperation. Projects such as Khorlochhu are essential for meeting energy needs while protecting the environment.
