Dharavi Redevelopment Project renamed Navbharat Mega Developers

Adani-backed Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Ltd (DRPPL), tasked with transforming Mumbai’s Dharavi slum, has rebranded itself as Navbharat Mega Developers Private Ltd (NMDPL). The rebranding marks a significant step in the project’s journey toward revamping one of Asia’s largest slums.

The company announced on Saturday that its board of directors and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs had approved the name change. This rebranding aims to distinguish NMDPL from the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority (DRA), the Maharashtra government body overseeing the project. Despite the updated identity, the DRA will continue as the supervising authority, ensuring the government’s involvement remains intact.

NMDPL, previously known as DRPPL, is leading the ambitious Dharavi redevelopment initiative, spanning over 600 acres. The project operates as a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) with an 80% stake held by the Adani Group and the remaining 20% by the Maharashtra government through the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). The redevelopment aims to transform Dharavi into a modern urban space with upgraded infrastructure, housing, and amenities for its residents.

As of November 2024, approximately ₹2,000 crore has been invested in the project. This includes ₹1,000 crore allocated for land acquisition and another ₹1,000 crore for surveys and related preparatory activities. These investments reflect the scale and complexity of the initiative, which is expected to bring significant socio-economic changes to the area.

The Bombay High Court recently dismissed a writ petition by UAE-based SecLink Technologies Corporation, which had challenged the award of the project to Adani Properties Private Limited (APPL). APPL was selected as the preferred bidder in November 2022, solidifying its role in the landmark urban transformation.

The Dharavi redevelopment project is poised to reshape Mumbai’s urban landscape, with NMDPL at the forefront of this monumental endeavour.
