Micromax and Taiwan’s Phison have announced a joint venture, MiPhi, to design and manufacture artificial intelligence-enabled storage chipsets in India. This collaboration is set to revolutionize the AI landscape while bolstering the country’s indigenous technology capabilities.

Micromax partners with Taiwan’s Phison for advanced AI storage

Micromax Informatics, in partnership with Taiwan-based storage technology leader Phison, has launched a joint venture to develop and produce storage solutions for servers and other applications. The venture, MiPhi, will operate from Micromax’s Noida facility, with Micromax holding a 55% stake and Phison owning 45%.

Rahul Sharma, Co-Founder of Micromax, highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative:

“Storage chipsets are crucial for security and strategic autonomy. With this venture, India can reduce its dependence on foreign technologies and lead the AI storage market globally.”

AI-enabled storage solutions to transform India’s tech sector

The new joint venture will focus on creating cost-effective AI-enabled storage solutions. According to Sharma, the collaboration aims to lower GPU costs by up to 90%, making advanced technologies more accessible for industries such as automobiles, IoT, mobile devices, and data centres.

Commercial trials with Indian organizations are already underway, with shipments expected to commence in Q1 2025. The project will also help build a skilled workforce, with plans to train 1,000 engineers over the next three years through Phison’s expertise.

Phison and Micromax to localize AI storage production

The joint venture intends to leverage existing wafer suppliers to manufacture storage modules domestically. By focusing on embedded storage for industries and consumer applications, Micromax and Phison aim to meet the growing demand for advanced storage solutions in India and beyond.

Sharma added:

“Our design-first approach targets India as the primary market, with plans to expand globally. This venture will enable us to disrupt the AI storage segment effectively.”

Reducing dependence on foreign storage technologies

India currently lacks indigenous storage solution providers, making this partnership critical for self-reliance in storage technology. With this initiative, Micromax and Phison aim to establish India as a global leader in AI-adaptive storage solutions.
