In a landmark move that signals Tesla’s strong intent for India’s EV future, the American electric vehicle pioneer is set to throw open the doors to its very first supercharging station in the country next week. Mumbai’s vibrant Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) will play host to this crucial hub, with the official launch slated for August 4, 2025.
What’s Special About This Supercharger?
Tesla’s Mumbai supercharging station stands out for several reasons:
- Four V4 Supercharging Stalls: These DC fast-chargers deliver up to 250kW, enough to juice up the new Tesla Model Y for up to 267km in just 15 minutes. That’s more than enough for five round trips between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Gateway of India.
- Four Destination (AC) Chargers: In addition to super-fast charging, there are AC chargers for longer, more relaxed top-ups, offering up to 11kW.
- Competitive Pricing: Supercharging is priced at ₹24 per kWh, while AC charging comes in at ₹14 per kWh, making it one of the competitive offerings in the premium EV market.
- Tesla Experience Centre Nearby: The brand recently opened its flagship experience centre in Maker Maxity, BKC further driving curiosity and enthusiasm among early adopters.
Why Mumbai, Why Now?
This launch isn’t just about a charging station; it’s a strategic signal. With India’s EV infrastructure still in its infancy, Tesla’s entry could trigger a rapid acceleration in high-speed charging networks, especially in premium urban centres. The Mumbai debut will be the first of at least eight supercharging sites slated for rollout, heralding a new era of cross-country journeys in electric style.
Tesla’s India Playbook: More Than Cars
The supercharger’s arrival comes hot on the heels of Tesla’s official India launch last month, including the Model Y rear-wheel-drive option starting at ₹59.89 lakh. Deliveries are expected within the coming quarter and Tesla is sweetening the deal with free home wall connector installations for new buyers.
Tesla’s Model Y offers:
- 0–100kmph sprint in under 6 seconds
- Up to 622km of range on a single charge (Long Range variant)
- Global standard fast-charging perks, now available in Mumbai
What This Means for India’s EV Ambitions
Tesla’s move is expected to be a watershed moment for the adoption of premium electric cars in India. The addition of world-class supercharging infrastructure shrinks “range anxiety” and sets a high bar for rivals potentially spurring investments by both automakers and infrastructure providers in the EV space.
As Mumbai gears up to become Tesla’s first India stronghold, the entire national EV conversation just got a lot more exciting, and electrified.
