OpenAI officially introduced Study Mode in ChatGPT on July 29, 2025. Available to all logged‑in users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, and rolling out to ChatGPT Edu soon, Study Mode aims to transform ChatGPT from a shortcut engine into an intelligent learning companion.
What Is Study Mode and How Does It Work?
Study Mode uses a method similar to Socratic questioning to help users solve problems step by step instead of just giving answers. When you activate it using the “Study and Learn” icon in the tools menu, ChatGPT will ask you questions, give hints, and encourage you to think deeply about the topic. Lessons are divided into smaller sections to make it easier to understand and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Some of the features include:
- Interactive prompts to prompt critical thinking
- Personalized learning based on prior chat memory and user self-assessment
- Knowledge checks with quizzes and open-ended feedback
- Toggling flexibility – students can turn the mode on or off during any conversation.
Collaboration with Indian EdTech Startups
OpenAI announced that it will roll out new features and work with Indian education technology companies and U.S. learning platforms. They will create custom educational tools using ChatGPT APIs. This partnership places OpenAI as a key player in India’s edtech market.
Study Mode has already been beta‑tested by Indian students, including IIT aspirants, across subject areas like exam prep, homework review, and concept learning. It supports over 11 Indian languages and comes with multimodal support such as text, voice, and images, making it accessible across urban and rural classrooms.
Why Study Mode Matters for India and Education
ChatGPT has become one of the world’s most widely used learning tools, especially in India. But concerns around academic misuse and overreliance have been growing. Study Mode directly addresses this by prioritizing actual learning over instant solutions, encouraging students to think critically rather than cheat.
OpenAI emphasizes that this release is just the beginning. They plan future enhancements like visual aids, progress tracking, goal setting, and deeper personalization to further empower students.
Built to Encourage Learning – Not Just Fast Solutions
OpenAI’s launch of Study Mode represents a significant change in AI education. By working directly with Indian edtech startups and focusing on thoughtful design, OpenAI is making ChatGPT more relevant for learning. Study Mode includes smart prompts, language support, and adaptability to encourage active learning, critical thinking, and academic integrity, instead of just providing answers.
