Matcha has suddenly become the new coffee. From celebrities to next door neighbours, everybody seems to have changed their go-to morning beverage preferences. And Bollywood actress Sanya Malhotra has tuned in at the right time to start her entrepreneurship journey with Bree Matcha.
Onset
It all started when she was on a holiday to Japan. She happened to take a sip of the delicious drink and instantly acquired a taste for it. Upon returning home she found that the current India matcha brands were not satisfactory in terms of quality and taste. The result of this was: Bree.
“At a time when everything feels urgent, Bree Matcha is my personal reminder to slow down and be intentional,” said Malhotra. “It’s a ritual I deeply believe in, and I’m extremely proud to be a part of something that builds and supports natural energy and calm focus.”

The replacement of tea and coffee
What exactly is a matcha, one might wonder. Matcha is a finely ground powder of green tea specially processed from shade-grown tea leaves. Shade growing gives matcha its characteristic bright green colour and strong umami flavour. It is a much better alternative for coffee as it is rich in antioxidants, boosts energy without the jitters, supports metabolism, enhances focus, and helps promote calm and relaxation thanks to its L-theanine content.
After discovering its wonders Sanya decided to convert it into a business venture and her team helped her connect to the co-founders of Essenzaa Nutrition, Dr. Kunal Shah and Siddharth Shah. They were on a mission to turn global superfoods into everyday rituals with the help of their nutraceutical and herbal contract manufacturing company.
Products
Thus, joining hands these three musketeers founded Bree Matcha this very year. The matcha is sourced from Kagoshima City in Japan which is known for its rich volcanic soil. There are three main products available for purchase: Ceremonial Grade Matcha, Everyday Matcha and the Ceremonial Matcha Gift Kit. Everyday matcha has been priced at Rs 600 for 30 grams and this will be a month’s worth of matcha, while the ceremonial matcha, which is the first flush of a matcha leaf, is priced at Rs 1,600 for 30 grams.
Malhotra joins a growing list of Indian celebrities entering the wellness and lifestyle product space. In recent years, actors like Deepika Padukone (with 82°E), Anushka Sharma (Nush) and Alia Bhatt (Ed-a-Mamma) have explored entrepreneurial ventures that align with their personal interests in clean beauty, fashion, and sustainability.
Future Vision
Siddharth noted that the matcha market in India today is worth around Rs 450 crore and is at a nascent stage. In the next five years, this market is estimated to cross Rs 850 crore, he added. He expects Bree to grow five times its current size and break even in 12-18 months.
Gen Z is all about that clean energy boost. So, the current priority people give health will help fetch the brand the revenue it wants to generate. Bree Matcha isn’t just energy. It’s brewed energy for a balanced life. A balance that is much needed today.
