Government-owned telecommunication corporation Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has given a ₹3,000 crore contract to 61-year-old Indian firm Polycab for the BharatNet Project in Bihar. The project looks to improve broadband connectivity in rural India, an essential move towards narrowing the digital divide.

Key Highlights of the Deal
  • Project Scope: Polycab will be responsible for designing, installing, upgrading, and maintaining the middle-mile network for BharatNet in Bihar.
  • Strategic Importance: BharatNet is India’s flagship rural broadband project, connecting gram panchayats (village councils) to high-speed internet for e-governance, education, and healthcare services.
  • Project Expansion: Over 2 lakh gram panchayats have already been connected under BharatNet, with BSNL and Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) spearheading the initiative in phases.
Polycab’s Role in BharatNet

Founded in 1964, Polycab is India’s leading manufacturer of wires and cables. Under this contract, the company will:

  • Build and maintain the critical middle-mile broadband network.
  • Upgrade existing infrastructure to improve connectivity.
  • Ensure long-term maintenance and efficiency of the network in Bihar.
