Rockstar Games appears to be taking the scale and detail of Grand Theft Auto VI to another level. Fresh details highlighted in a report by The New York Times indicate that the upcoming open-world title will feature a significantly larger playable world than Red Dead Redemption 2, alongside a major increase in the number of animations used throughout the game.

The reported figures provide a glimpse into the size of Rockstar’s latest project. While the exact boundaries and overall structure of the map remain to be experienced by players, the comparison with one of Rockstar’s most expansive previous games suggests that GTA 6 is being developed on an enormous scale.

A World That Could Surpass Rockstar’s Previous Benchmark

The most notable detail concerns the size of the GTA 6 map. According to The New York Times report, Rockstar said the game’s overall map is three times larger than the playable area featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.

That is a significant comparison because Red Dead Redemption 2 already offers an expansive world filled with towns, settlements, wilderness, roads and varied landscapes. Its large playable area became one of the defining features of the 2018 western adventure.

GTA 6’s reported scale would therefore mark a substantial expansion over Rockstar’s previous game. However, map size alone does not determine how large a game feels during normal gameplay. The way Rockstar designs its locations, roads, cities, activities and other explorable areas will ultimately shape how players experience the world.

More Than 600,000 Animations Add to the Scale

Rockstar’s reported ambitions extend beyond the size of the map. The same New York Times report states that GTA 6 contains well over 600,000 animations.

Animations play an important role in making an open-world game feel dynamic. They can cover character movements, reactions, interactions with objects and numerous environmental actions. A larger animation library can allow developers to create more varied movements and responses across the game world.

The reported figure also represents a major increase compared with Rockstar’s previous releases. According to the report, Grand Theft Auto V had around 55,000 animations, while Red Dead Redemption 2 reached approximately 300,000.

If those reported figures are used for comparison, GTA 6 would contain more than twice the number of animations found in Red Dead Redemption 2 and more than ten times the figure associated with GTA V.

Rockstar Continues to Push Open-World Detail

The reported map and animation figures point to the scale of Rockstar’s development effort for GTA 6. Rather than simply expanding the geographical size of its world, the studio appears to be increasing the level of detail used to populate it.

The combination of a much larger map and a considerably larger animation library could give Rockstar more room to create varied environments and character interactions. Still, the actual impact of these technical improvements will only become clear when the game is released and players can explore the world themselves.

GTA 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. Until then, details about the game’s map, world design and technical systems will continue to shape expectations surrounding Rockstar’s next major release.

For now, the reported three-times-larger map and more than 600,000 animations offer a striking indication of how far GTA 6 could go beyond the scale of Rockstar’s earlier open-world games.
