ChatGPT, Claude and Grok users reported widespread problems on Thursday, with Downdetector logging tens of thousands of reports in the US. While all three services acknowledged difficulties, there is still no verified evidence that the problems share a single cause.

Users of several major AI platforms ran into service problems on Thursday, September 3, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and X’s Grok all drawing outage reports around the same period. Some Google Gemini users also reported difficulties.

The timing naturally raises one question: Why are ChatGPT, Claude and Grok down at the same time?

OpenAI has acknowledged elevated errors affecting ChatGPT and Codex and said it was investigating. Claude, meanwhile, went a step further by saying it had identified the cause of elevated errors affecting requests to three named models. Grok also confirmed that it was experiencing issues but did not provide a reason for the disruption in the information available so far.

That means the simultaneous disruption should not, at this stage, be treated as evidence of a single technical failure linking the platforms.

What is happening with ChatGPT?

ChatGPT saw by far the largest volume of reports among the services covered in the available outage data.

At around 8.20 pm IST, Downdetector had recorded more than 2,800 reports involving ChatGPT in India. In the United States, the figure was considerably higher, with more than 35,000 reports around the same period.

A separate Downdetector snapshot cited around 8 pm IST showed more than 5,000 reports involving ChatGPT across its website and app.

These figures represent reports submitted to Downdetector rather than a confirmed count of every person affected.

OpenAI acknowledged the problem, saying there were “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex” and that it was investigating the affected services.

Crucially, the information available does not identify the underlying technical reason behind those elevated errors. So while OpenAI has confirmed a service problem, any more specific explanation for why ChatGPT is down would currently be speculation.

Why is Claude down?

Claude was also hit by elevated error reports, although the Downdetector numbers were substantially lower than those recorded for ChatGPT.

Around 8.20 pm IST, more than 170 Claude-related reports had been recorded in India, while the number in the United States had crossed 1,400.

Anthropic’s update provides one of the more specific details to emerge from the disruption.

Claude said it had identified the cause of elevated errors on requests to Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5, adding that work on a fix was underway.

However, the available update does not spell out what that identified cause actually was. It would therefore be inaccurate to attach a particular infrastructure, server, network or software failure to Claude without further confirmation.

Grok also reports service issues

Grok users reported problems during roughly the same period.

Downdetector recorded more than 40 reports in India and more than 1,200 in the United States around 8.20 pm IST.

Grok itself acknowledged the disruption, saying it was “experiencing issues” and that work was underway to restore service as quickly as possible. No specific reason for the problem was provided in the available statement.

Is Google Gemini down too?

There were also reports of problems affecting Google Gemini.

The available information says some Gemini users encountered issues, although it does not provide comparable Downdetector numbers or an official explanation from Google.

That distinction matters. The evidence supports saying that some users reported Gemini problems, but not that Gemini was experiencing the same scale or type of disruption as ChatGPT, Claude or Grok.

Are the ChatGPT, Claude and Grok outages connected?

There is currently no verified evidence in the available information showing that the problems are connected.

The services were experiencing difficulties during a similar window, but their public updates are different.

OpenAI reported elevated errors and said it was investigating. Anthropic said it had identified the cause of errors affecting three Claude models and was working on a fix. Grok acknowledged issues and said restoration work was underway. None of those statements links its problem to another AI provider.

The safest conclusion, therefore, is also the simplest one: several major AI services were having problems at around the same time, but a shared cause has not been established.

How widespread are the problems?

The United States produced the largest Downdetector figures cited in the available data.

At around 8.20 pm IST, reports in the US had crossed 35,000 for ChatGPT, 1,400 for Claude and 1,200 for Grok. In India, the respective figures were more than 2,800, 170 and 40.

The numbers offer a useful indication that users were encountering problems, but they should not be read as an exact measurement of an outage’s total reach. They are reports recorded by Downdetector at particular points in time.

For affected users, the key development now is not simply whether the report count rises or falls. It is whether OpenAI, Anthropic and Grok confirm that their respective problems have been resolved, and whether any of them disclose a more detailed explanation for what went wrong.

Until then, the answer to “Why is ChatGPT down?” remains limited: OpenAI has confirmed elevated errors and is investigating. Claude has confirmed elevated errors affecting three named models and says it has identified their cause, without disclosing that cause in the available update. Grok has acknowledged service issues but has not given a reason.
