Travellers commuting between Mumbai to Goa will soon have a new and faster mode of transport, as M2M Ferries is gearing up to launch a RoPAX ferry service connecting the two coastal destinations. The much-anticipated ferry will allow passengers to take their vehicles onboard, reducing travel time and congestion.
Faster & Convenient Mumbai to Goa route
The Mumbai-Goa RoPAX service, once operational, is expected to slash travel time to just 6.5 hours, a significant improvement from the 12-14 hours required for road travel. This ferry service, modelled on the successful Hazira-Ghogha route in Gujarat, aims to provide a seamless and scenic travel alternative along India’s western coastline.
M2M Ferries, known for its roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) services between Mumbai and Mandwa, has acquired a 15-year-old RoPAX vessel from Italy for this route. The ship is undergoing maintenance and retrofitting in Mumbai to meet operational standards.
Capacity & Route Details
The ferry is designed to accommodate 620 passengers and 60 vehicles, making it an ideal choice for tourists and business travellers. The proposed route will connect Mazgaon Dock in Mumbai to the Mormugao Port in Goa, with discussions underway to include a docking point at Panjim for added accessibility.
M2M Ferries has already submitted applications to the Directorate General of Shipping and other regulatory authorities for final approvals. Once greenlit, this service will become a key addition to India’s coastal transport network.
Ticket Pricing & Government Support
While the exact fare structure is yet to be finalized, M2M Ferries is seeking subsidies and tax incentives from the central government to keep the service affordable. Officials believe that with financial backing, the RoPAX service can offer cost-effective fares compared to existing air and road travel options.
Boost for Maritime Infrastructure
The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is also working on expanding coastal connectivity with new Ro-Ro terminals in Kashid, Revdanda, and Dighi. These developments are expected to enhance ferry-based transport options in the region over the next 18 months.
A Sustainable Alternative
With rising concerns over highway congestion and fuel consumption, the RoPAX ferry presents a greener alternative for long-distance travel. Industry experts view this initiative as a major step toward sustainable maritime transportation, potentially reducing carbon emissions associated with road traffic.
