In a significant move underscoring the rapid growth of India’s pet care industry, Nestlé S.A., the global food and beverage conglomerate and parent company of Nestlé India, has acquired a minority stake in Drools Pet Food Private Limited, making it India’s first pet food startup to enter the Unicorn ranks.
While the financial specifics remain undisclosed, Nestlé S.A. has confirmed the acquisition of a minority stake in Drools. Despite this strategic investment, Drools will retain full operational and strategic independence, continuing to chart its growth path.
Nestlé Enters India’s Pet Food Market
With this investment, Drools and Nestlé are in a win-win position: the former has become a Unicorn, and the latter has broadened its global strategy to diversify into high-growth categories like pet care, which has become a multi-billion-dollar segment globally.
By entering the Indian market through an established player like Drools, Nestlé is well-positioned to capture a significant share of the rising demand fueled by increasing pet ownership, changing lifestyles, and growing awareness of pet wellness in India.
Nestlé Follows Drools’ $60M Funding Boost
This marks the second major backing for Drools from a global powerhouse. In June 2023, the company secured $60 million in funding from private equity firm L Catterton, which is supported by luxury conglomerate LVMH.
