In a significant step towards modernising its fleet, Air India has commenced its major overhaul project by delivering its first upgraded Boeing 777-300 ER. This move is part of the airline’s broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience.
Refurbishment Highlights
The refreshed aircraft underwent a comprehensive upgrade at a facility in Singapore, completed in around 50 days. The overhaul involved the installation of new carpets, seat covers, cushions, and extensive repairs to broken seats. Air India plans to refurbish the remaining 12 planes in its fleet by the end of the year.
Expanding Ultra-Long-Haul Capabilities
The newly refreshed Boeing 777-300 ER will initially serve on domestic routes for testing before being deployed for ultra-long-haul international operations. These flights, typically lasting over 14 hours, connect major Indian cities with destinations like Toronto, Vancouver, San Francisco, Chicago, Newark, and New York.
Addressing Challenges
Although the initial strategy was to begin refurbishing the fleet during the previous year, unexpected supply chain disruptions caused delays. In order to avoid further delays, the airline adopted a heavy refresh strategy. Air India’s fleet includes 40 wide-body aircraft, of which 13 are Boeing 777-300 ERs and 27 are Boeing 787s, some with first-class cabins.
Strategic Outlook
The airline’s decision to revamp its legacy aircraft aligns with its vision to provide a superior travel experience, especially on long-haul international routes. As the remaining aircraft undergo upgrades, Air India aims to reinforce its position in the competitive global aviation market.
This update is a milestone in Air India’s fleet planning, demonstrating the airline’s determination to increase both capacity and comfort for passengers.
